About Me

Hello,

My name is Yolanda Ransom. I am a Sociology Major currently in my second semester at SPS. I find people very interesting and have studied them all my life. I love "people watching"  and trying to imagine what their lives are like and what they are thinking about. People fascinate me and I want to understand them better and what I can do to improve the human condition.

My interest is in helping young people navigate the complexities of life. Currently a full time student, I am seeking a position with an organization that serves those with less advantages in life. As a focused, concerned individual I want to help these young people overcome the challenges they encounter in pursuing personal, educational and financial success. I am also on a journey to find out what career slot I fit into. My goal is to combine my love for music, my analytical skills and my interest in understanding people into a fulfilling career.

I am also an R&B/Soul singer named Yolanda R. You can find out about me and my music at my website www.yolandasvoice.com. In 2012, I threw my heart and soul into my music and completed two recordings. This is the cover to one of the albums that I recorded entitled "A Few Of My Thoughts..." :

The happiness that I found by doing what I love, spurred me to redesign my whole life around what I love. Through continued learning experiences at SPS, in life, and through musical expression, I want to work at a job that I love. My desire is to live a life of upbuilding others through both my music and the work that I do on a daily basis. That is why I am a Sociology Major.

My experience with art involves many visits to museums in NYC such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The American Museum of Natural History, The Cloisters and The Malcom  X Museum. I have viewed exhibits at the Schomburg Center  for Research in Black Culture. I have also visited the National Museum of African Art in Washington, D. C. I like artwork that represents people and depicts realistic imagery of people, such as color and black and white photography. I love marble and hand crafted statues of people such as the Romans and Greeks created and smooth carvings of wood and ivory such as the African artists created. I like colorful paintings that have solid structure as opposed to abstract works.  Although these types of works are my preference, I look forward to being surprised with new types and pieces of art that I may also come to love throughout  this course. I expect to learn about the forces behind much of Modern Art as well as the factors that may influence the direction of art in the future.
