Statement of Purpose

I have long known I have a passion for writing and communication. From my early days in grade school I wrote everything from poetry, to songs, to short narratives and works of fiction. I honed my skills throughout my youth, and when I began college as an Advertising and Marketing student, I found that I often enjoyed writing papers more than creating advertising briefs. I loaded up on courses such as Journalism, Fashion Journalism, and Mass Communications before graduating with my Associate Degree in May of 2015.

After graduation, I decided to pursue my education further by obtaining my Bachelor’s degree, and I enrolled at CUNY SPS as a Communications and Media major. Through pursuing this educational path, I wanted to explore how my lifelong passion for writing could be applied practically into a potential career. I knew that one of the best ways to do this would be to seek out an internship where I could gain practical skills. Journalism has always been an interest of mine, as the process of writing a story involves much of the same techniques I enjoyed while formulating academic research papers. One must conceptualize a topic, research background information, seek out primary sources, compile the narrative into an interesting and compelling storyline, and finally write an article that captivates the reader.

I searched for potential journalism internships in the fall of my Junior year, and secured one for the spring semester of 2016 at Straus News, a media organization that publishes weekly “hyperlocal” New York City newspapers. This was a great opportunity for me to delve into the writing and newsgathering process. As a member of a small team, I was to be an integral part of the editorial process, and would even leave the semester with a portfolio of published clips and projects. Through this experience, I hope to gain the practical knowledge and expertise that will lead to deeper learning, as well as be a great addition to my resume.
