Griswold’s diamond reveals much about Star Trek’s complex web of relationships and its nature as a cultural object. But by pairing it with a chronological assessment of the origins and variables associated with Star Trek, a general pattern of cause and effect also emerges. Specifically, the social world and technological advances of the twentieth century informed the popular work of science fiction which, in turn, challenged social norms and spread its messages around the world. As an unexpected turn of events, the fervent fans that were inspired by Star Trek managed to resurrect the show, enticing its producers to create new versions of the series they so loved. This forward-thinking franchise continues to be enormously popular and influential, guaranteeing one certainty: Star Trek’s best days are still in the future.
