What is Social Media?
What makes a social media website, application or mobile experience is the ability for the end user to interact with the site and participate in a social experience with others that interact with the site. Many sites can fall under this description. Some of those websites are social networking sites, some are dating websites, some are political campaign sites and still some are sites simply set up to share photographs or other media content. There are a few common denominators when it comes to social media Internet experiences. Usually a social media service, no matter what medium delivers it, requires it's users to make some kind of profile, determine some people they can connect with and provide a platform for these users to interact with each other. Each user's profile can be as large or small as the site allows and the list of connections a user has may be real-life friends or complete strangers. The platform of interaction is what varies from each social media experience (Boyd 211).
