Just like other areas of social interaction, social media has had a direct impact on the workplace environment. For companies, social media provides an opportunity to directly communicate with customers, create an online company presence, build brand recognition and recruit employees. For individuals, social media provides professional forums, professional social networking, shared job knowledge and ease of job searches. When it comes to the use of social media in the workplace, some employers allow more freedom then others. While social media can have positive impacts on employees when used at the workplace, there can also be negative impacts. Because of this some companies completely restrict all sites outside of company approved social media (internal wikis, bulletin boards, etc.) other companies are much more relaxed in social media and allow complete freedom to their employees during work hours. Still others place restrictions that allow the usage of social media but under the agreed to rules provided.
