Enrolling in the Masters of Arts in Disability Studies program at CUNY School of Professional Studies was a life changing experience. My work schedule and personal life schedule had to be re-organized to accommodate the course meeting times and the class assignments. The result, I have become a better human being and learned that all human beings are of equal value, just different neurologically and physically. We are all human, and see the world through a different lens. I believe it is our differences that make us unique beings - capable of 'things' beyond our imagination.
Jean Vanier (1998) writes, “...we all want to be valued…to be able to develop our capacities and grow to greater freedom”. I am committed to helping people with disabilities become aware of their value as human beings, and grow to greater freedom. The Masters of Arts in Disability Studies curriculum and faculty at CUNY School of Professional Studies reveals this shift of consciousness to students and other members of this academic community. This shift in consciousness is a 'way of thinking' and has potential for World Wide Change. A change in how disabilities and people with disabilities are viewed. One way to accomplish change is by working with and living with people with disabilities in our community. One of the most significant things I learned while attending the Disability Studies program is to view disability as a culture. It is valuable to establish friendships with people from a variety of cultures, including disability culture.
