Dear Ana --
The applause from Angela is appropriate and echoed here. (I hope that you will also read her paper.) It has been a joy to work with you this semester, watching you bring this research and paper to fruition.
There are several very important areas in which the gender gap remains problematic. Your paper targets one of them. Personally, as a founding member of the Virginia Women's Political Caucus in the 1980s, and earlier in the 1970s as a founding member of the NYC Chapter of Sociologists for Women in Society, I'm very excited to see at last this paper on your eportfolio -- even if the results in terms of representation are not what we dreamed and hoped they would be by now when my generation first began the long march. You have eloquently reviewed the existing research; located, analyzed and marshaled reliable data to serve as evidence; and explored causes for the gap in a systematic and highly professional way. The paper is well-organized and well-written. Thus it brings this important information forward in a convincing way. It should have an impact on everyone who reads it.
Thanks for all the hard work, the drafts and redrafts, the revisions and re-computations of data tables. You had something important to say and, I hope, you can now look back and say: "It was worth it." All good wishes for your continued success. Keep in touch with us.
Dr. Walters

Hi Eliana,
Wow! What an interesting and well-written capstone project! I am really impressed with your writing and research, and you put it all together so beautifully! I was shocked by some of the statistics that you discovered, as I guess you may have been as well. You really painted a thorough picture of the problem of the gender gap in US politics. I particularly liked your comparisons between America and the rest of the world. It was so interesting to read about the progress women have made, and about the various reasons why women are more reluctant to enter politics. I never knew that some countries have used gender quotas to promote equality, and I am very interested in learning more about gender quotas to enhance equal political representation, especially as they can be used in America. Your literature review was very well done and full of useful information.
Before reading your essay, I had never put a lot of thought into gender representation in US politics. Thank you for enlightening me on the current situation, and for writing such an academic and thoroughly interesting paper. It seems fit to be published in a journal or the NY Times - you should submit it to them!
"The nation needs to add women to leadership positions, not because it is fair or because it is “the right thing to do,” but because adding more women to leadership positions will make for stronger policies and thus a better world for us all."
Great job!
Sincerely,
Angela Isaac
