Welcome to my e-portfolio. My intention is to show you how my astonishingly fast two years with the CUNY SPS Masters Program in Disability Studies has provided me a substantial base of knowledge to enhance my university teaching career helping graduate and undergraduate students and the surrounding community understand that disability is not a tragedy but simply a different way of living.

My mission upon entering the program was to unearth the silver bullet that would ensure inclusion. It was toward the end of my tenure with the program where I discovered the magical thought or action that would convince society to accept all people: we are all variations on the theme of being human. But how to get that message out?

Spoiler alert: the simple answer I arrived at is stated in the descriptive heading of the Sprout Film Festival, which shows films by and about people with intellectual disabilities—“Making the invisible visible.”

My SPS academic work has provided me resoluteness as I provide platforms for self-advocates to express their ideas, show their talents, and participate in courses with typical students.  My SPS academic work introduced me to Sigmund Freud’s belief that “All people want work and love.” My SPS academic work has enabled me to promote assistive technology, universal design and a general awareness among members of society to not look at the chair but at the person, to see not what a person can’t do but what the person can do, to understand that disability is prevalent and not to be stigmatized. It is with this thinking that we can all enjoy a healthier, connected, fulfilled community.

This portfolio will not only reveal my passion but how this passion was harnessed, directed and put into practice via interaction with the dedicated professors I had the pleasure of working with in the CUNY SPS Disability Studies Masters Program.

My university colleagues have told me that Disability Studies has always been my métier, as they have watched it influence all of my choices for course readings. As the esteemed writer Isaac B. Singer once said, “We all write from one address.”

I’m so pleased that SPS has provided me a path to the authoritative voice I desire in the Disability Studies field. For this exposure, I will always be grateful.
